The Goksu Delta

The Goksu Delta was a planned stop off on our way to Birecik. For this reason we spent only a couple of hours here. However, even in this short space of time covering the most obvious areas we managed to see some of the specialities of the delta.

We drove a circuit around the delta following the instructions in Gosneys guide, starting at the holiday village, passing sites 3 and 4 initially. Along the edge of Akgol at site 4 there are now a couple of hides allowing views over the lake. Our birding was not at its best as we arrived at the delta around midday. However, we heard and saw Black Francolin and Graceful Warbler in the dunes along the edge of the lake and from a hide at site 4 saw Little and Great White Egret, Greater Flamingo, Purple Heron, White Stork, Ruddy Shelduck, A single Marbled Duck flew from the reeds and a lone Purple Gallinule ventured out onto the mud. There were many Marsh Harriers over the whole of the area, visible from the hides. These hides are signposted from the track which continues along from the disused runway.

Next we drove round to site 5 and found another hide. Before reaching the hide we were scalded by a beautiful Rufous Bushchat from the roadside and a pair of Stone Curlew flew up from the road in front of the car. Close to the hide a pair of Spur-winged Plover with young were seen and several Graceful Warblers along with Great Reed and Fan-tailed Warbler were noted in the area.

We next headed for the fishing village along the shore of Paradeniz Golu, site 7 where a Long Legged Buzzard took short flights along the road in front of the car. Along the shore of the lake on some sand spits were Oystercatcher, Little-ringed Plover, Greater Sand Plover and resting Little Terns. Close to a small stream the other side of the road were some Black-headed Wagtails.

En route to the Delta we picked up Shag, Yellow-legged Gull and a single Armenian Gull on or over the sea.

We definitely didn't allow sufficient time to take in much of the delta and morning and evening visits would obviously be much more rewarding than our midday visit. I would suggest staying in the area for at least one full day if time permits. take care driving around the delta as the roads can be quite bumpy in places and very sandy in others.
